Glasgow OKs Sale of Athletes’ Village Homes to Places for People

Glasgow City Council has given the green light to the sale of 58 homes to Places For People as part of the Athletes’ Village Phase 2 development agreement. This exciting new phase will see the construction of 125 houses in total.
City Legacy, the developer consortium, has been approached by Places for People, Thriving Investments, and MMR Fund for the purchase of 58 homes for mid-market rental. With yesterday’s decision to amend the development agreement, construction is set to kick off before the end of 2024.
These new homes are set to address the growing demand for mid-market rental properties in Glasgow’s East End during a time of limited availability. The remaining 77 homes in the second phase will be up for grabs for private sale.
In addition to this exciting development, another council decision has seen the approval of a lease of up to 25 years to Rockvilla CIC for the Dalmarnock Legacy Hub. This building, which first opened its doors in October 2015 and was previously operated by the People’s Development Trust, will host a doctor’s surgery, a dentist, a pharmacist, and Scottish Sports Futures.
Rockvilla CIC plans to transform the Legacy Hub into a space for communal and office use on the first floor, with a licensed area on the ground floor catering to both community events and external functions. The income generated from these functions will support the community space upstairs.
The CIC aims to utilise the theatre space in the Hub for a variety of events, including A Play, a Pie and a Pint showcasing local talent, a free after-school meals club in partnership with Mary’s Meals, and offering discounted rental space to local charities and community groups. A Community Advisory Board will be established to involve tenants and local community representatives in decision-making.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly, convener for neighbourhood assets at Glasgow City Council, expressed his enthusiasm for these developments, stating: “The approval of the lease for the Dalmarnock Legacy Hub is a significant milestone that will rejuvenate this community asset. The addition of new homes in the Athletes’ Village Phase 2 is a welcome improvement for the East End community.”
