Aberdeen residents receive funding for living costs
Communities and charities in Aberdeen are set to receive vital support to help with the increasing cost of living, thanks to the second round of funding allocated for this purpose.
The Anti-Poverty and Inequality Committee of Aberdeen City Council recently approved the allocation of the remaining funds from the £1 million grant aimed at supporting individuals and families struggling with the cost of living crisis.
The focus of this second round of funding will be on providing emergency assistance to those facing financial pressures, especially as we head into the challenging winter months.
Edward Obi, an external advisor for the Anti-Poverty and Inequality Committee, expressed his commitment to contributing to this important cause. He praised the committee’s efforts in addressing poverty through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, highlighting the importance of uplifting and empowering vulnerable communities for a more equitable and prosperous future.
The proposed allocation of the remaining funding includes:
- Food procurement and pantries – Food Poverty Action Aberdeen (£242,038)
- Scottish Welfare Fund Crisis Grants/ Community Care Grants – Aberdeen City Council Revenues and Benefits (£96,382)
- Fuel poverty vouchers and advice – SCARF (£80,000)
- Essentials for underprivileged families – AberNecessities (£40,300)
- Christmas family panto package for low-income families – Aberdeen Performing Arts (£10,000)
After the committee meeting, members visited Cairncry Community Centre as part of their planned visits to witness firsthand how recent funding has been utilized. They engaged with volunteers and explored ways in which the council can support community organizations in addressing poverty and ensuring financial sustainability.
