Lesmahagow approves 224-home Persimmon project

South Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee has given the green light for a new development of 224 energy-efficient homes in Lesmahagow. The project, led by Persimmon West Scotland, is set to address the pressing need for new housing in the area, located at Wellburn Farm as outlined in the local development plan.
The proposed homes will offer a range of two-bedroom terraces to four-bedroom detached houses, tailored to meet the demands of the local housing market. To promote sustainability, these homes will come equipped with solar panels and electric car charging points, assisting homeowners in reducing their carbon footprint and lowering household bills.
In addition to the residential units, the development will feature new play parks and public open spaces, enhancing the quality of life in the community. Other notable improvements include funding for upgrades to McKirdy Park, a new roundabout and traffic calming measures on Strathaven Road, and a redesigned entrance to the village.
Moreover, the project will contribute approximately £575,000 towards local schools and nursery provisions, along with an extra £570,000 to support affordable housing initiatives in South Lanarkshire. The development is also expected to create 40 construction jobs annually, along with an additional 44 positions in services and local businesses.
Chris Logan, the managing director of Persimmon West Scotland, expressed his gratitude to the South Lanarkshire Council for their backing. He highlighted the company’s engagement with local residents to address their concerns and incorporate their feedback into the approved plans, prioritising road safety and community enhancements such as the renovation of McKirdy Park.
Logan stated, “Our development represents a significant investment in Lesmahagow, aiming to build new homes, stimulate job growth, and enhance the local environment. We are confident that this initiative will have a positive and enduring impact on the Lesmahagow community.”
