East Lothian approves new poverty strategy

East Lothian Council, in partnership with various organisations including NHS Lothian, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire & Rescue Service, charity organizations, and education providers, has recently approved a comprehensive plan to address poverty across the region. This four-year plan, known as the East Lothian Poverty Plan 2021-2023, is part of the county’s broader goal to rebuild and recover from the challenges brought on by the pandemic.

Prior to presenting an updated version for 2024-2028, the East Lothian Partnership engaged in a year-long consultation process. This process involved online surveys, focus groups, conversations with lived experience groups (including young people), and thematic sessions focusing on areas such as gender, disability, and childcare.

The feedback received during these consultations shed light on the profound impacts of poverty on individuals in East Lothian. Many highlighted the detrimental effects on their overall well-being, confidence, and sense of self-worth. Individuals shared stories of having to make difficult choices between heating their homes or putting food on the table. These firsthand accounts played a crucial role in shaping the new plan and its key priorities.

Councillor Colin McGinn, Cabinet member for Community Wellbeing, emphasized that poverty goes beyond a mere lack of financial resources. It is a complex issue that affects health, well-being, and individuals’ freedom to make choices. The Poverty Plan outlines the collaborative efforts of the East Lothian Partnership to empower individuals and provide them with the agency to lead fulfilling lives.

The main objectives of the plan align with the Scottish Government’s goals and revolve around increasing income levels and fostering resilient communities for the future. Key focus areas include:

  • Creating quality job opportunities with fair wages and supporting individuals in acquiring the necessary skills for secure employment
  • Ensuring residents receive adequate financial support through benefits and assistance with living costs
  • Promoting a good quality of life by addressing housing issues, health disparities, food security, and building a robust community
  • Preparing East Lothian for climate change impacts through proactive measures

Community input emphasized the importance of how services are delivered, advocating for approaches that are compassionate, discreet, and uphold the dignity of individuals facing poverty-related challenges. The plan also underscores the significance of effective partnership working to tailor solutions that meet the unique needs of East Lothian’s communities.

Councillor McGinn expressed gratitude to all participants in the consultation process, especially those who shared their personal experiences with poverty. He acknowledged the hardships faced by individuals due to various factors, including the aftermath of the pandemic and rising living costs. The council is committed to creating a poverty-free East Lothian that benefits all residents and communities.

Looking ahead, a detailed action plan outlining specific activities will be released in the near future.
