National Express tests electric bus.

National Express Coventry is currently conducting a trial of a state-of-the-art fully electric Volvo BZL Electric demonstrator on various routes within the city centre. This cutting-edge vehicle has been meticulously designed to offer passengers a premium experience with minimal interior noise and maximum comfort. Equipped with air conditioning, heating, and convenient seatback USB chargers, this electric bus ensures a smooth and enjoyable journey for all.

The Volvo BZL Electric boasts a four-battery configuration capable of delivering an impressive total power output of up to 376kWh. Charged overnight at the operator’s depot using a 40kW DC mobile charger provided by Volvo, this sustainable transport solution is paving the way for a greener future. Furthermore, its regenerative braking system efficiently recovers energy during deceleration, converting it into usable power to propel the vehicle.

Internationally recognised for their environmental benefits, Volvo’s zero tailpipe emission BZL Electric vehicles have been deployed in more than 10 countries worldwide. Exclusively offered in the UK with MCV bodywork, these eco-friendly buses are reshaping the public transport landscape.

Expressing enthusiasm for this eco-friendly initiative, Antony Goozee, Bus Strategy and Commercial Director for National Express, highlighted the critical role that buses play in reducing harmful emissions. With the aim of encouraging more individuals to opt for bus travel over private cars, National Express is committed to providing sustainable transport options. As pioneers in sustainable transport, all 140 of their electric double-decker buses are already producing zero emissions at the tailpipe.

Looking towards the future, National Express is collaborating with Volvo to assess the performance of the BZL Electric bus under everyday operational conditions. This partnership aims to enhance understanding of the vehicle’s capabilities and efficiencies for potential future integration into their fleet.

Domenico Bondi, Managing Director at Volvo Bus UK & Ireland, expressed delight at the deployment of the Volvo BZL Electric demonstrator by such a prestigious operator as National Express Coventry. Aligning with Coventry’s ambitious plans to become the UK’s first all-electric bus city by 2025, Volvo is dedicated to supporting efforts to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create quieter communities throughout the UK. The ongoing collaboration with National Express signifies a mutual commitment to achieving shared sustainability goals.

As cities worldwide strive to transition to cleaner modes of transport, the adoption of electric buses presents a promising solution to combat climate change and enhance the quality of urban life. National Express and Volvo’s partnership exemplifies a proactive approach towards embracing sustainable transport alternatives, setting a positive example for the industry as a whole.
