New Bid to Turn Glasgow Office into Student Flats

Detailed plans have been submitted to convert a vacant B-listed building in Glasgow city centre into student accommodation. The premises at 250 St Vincent Street were originally built as a hotel in 1878 but later converted into offices. Permission was granted in 2020 to revert the building back to a hotel, but that plan fell through.

Now, an application has been put forward to transform the building into student accommodation featuring 150 beds within 146 bedrooms. Faulkner Browns Architects, on behalf of the applicant, explained that market research revealed a lack of demand for the current office spaces at 250 St Vincent Street due to factors like location and limited space flexibility.

The architects stated, “Despite the challenges in attracting office tenants, the building holds immense potential to be repurposed as a student residential facility. This exciting proposal aims to revive the building, bringing vitality to Blythswood Hill and enriching St Vincent Street and its surroundings.”

The proposed student accommodation will consist of studio rooms with kitchenettes, sleeping areas, and ensuite showers. Additionally, there will be six duplex rooms spread over the first two floors to make use of the existing double height windows facing St. Vincent Street. The living spaces will be complemented by various amenities including relaxation areas, study spaces, recreational areas, and storage facilities.
