New development plan for Easterhouse neighborhood.

The latest version of the Greater Easterhouse Strategic Development Framework (SDF) has undergone review by a committee of the Glasgow City Council. This framework outlines a spatial vision for the Greater Easterhouse area, comprising 16 residential neighbourhoods, and directs investment and development efforts. To bring this vision to fruition, an action programme has been devised, with council officers collaborating with local stakeholders to coordinate phases, funding, and infrastructure development.
Alongside Greater Easterhouse, Glasgow has five other Strategic Development Frameworks for the City Centre, Govan-Partick, the Inner East, North Glasgow, and the River Clyde. The Greater Easterhouse SDF will inform various initiatives including the Seven Lochs Wetland Park Project, the Liveable Neighbourhoods programme, and housing projects in the region. The framework outlines a clear vision and specific objectives for the area:
- Vision: Residents in Greater Easterhouse will prosper and enjoy well-being through inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.
- Key Outcomes:
- A vibrant Greater Easterhouse by 2025, fostering economic, social, and health benefits.
- A sustainable Greater Easterhouse by 2025, promoting engagement, livability, inclusivity, and distinctiveness.
- A well-connected Greater Easterhouse by 2025, with safe and pleasant walking and cycling routes, as well as efficient public transport.
- A green and resilient Greater Easterhouse by 2050, featuring a top-quality green, blue, and grey infrastructure network to combat climate change, preserve biodiversity, transition to net zero carbon emissions, and enhance health and well-being.
The development of the draft Greater Easterhouse SDF was influenced by public feedback, addressing concerns such as the provision of play areas, active travel, and public transportation. The draft SDF now awaits approval from the council’s City Administration Committee. If endorsed, the council will inform the Scottish Government before incorporating the Greater Easterhouse SDF as supplementary guidance into the Glasgow City Development Plan. This plan shapes all planning and land use decisions in Glasgow, offering a spatial strategy for development and regeneration to create a healthy, high-quality environment and a compact city layout that supports sustainable growth.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, who chairs the neighbourhood assets and services committee at Glasgow City Council, expressed, “This Framework will not only build upon the recent development and revitalisation of Greater Easterhouse but also steer future endeavours and projects to optimise land usage within the area. Through utilising the Framework at local and hyper-local levels, the council and its partners will collaborate to realise the vision for Greater Easterhouse as a more dynamic, sustainable, connected, and resilient locale.”
Furthermore, an annual progress report on the Greater Easterhouse SDF will be presented to a council committee to provide updates on the ongoing developments in the region.
