Eco-friendly Waste Collection Revolutionizes Sanitation in China

The Luotuo Subdistrict Sanitation Centre in Zhenhai District, Ningbo City, is embracing a sustainable future with the introduction of new rubbish collection trucks powered by alternative energy sources.

These state-of-the-art vehicles will replace conventional kitchen waste trucks with innovative “oil-to-electric” technology. The transformation extends to two other waste trucks as well, marking a significant milestone in the centre’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

With a dedicated team of nearly 100 employees and a fleet of over 30 specialized sanitation vehicles, the Luotuo Subdistrict Sanitation Centre plays a vital role in maintaining cleanliness in both urban and rural areas. Their responsibilities include road cleaning, waste sorting, and household waste transportation within the locality.

The transition to eco-friendly waste collection vehicles follows a successful year-long trial period that demonstrated substantial cost savings. The innovative approach reduced management and operational expenses by more than 80%, enabling the recovery of leasing costs within a span of just five years.

In addition to financial benefits, the project has streamlined procurement and approval procedures, eliminating the need for significant upfront investment in vehicle purchases. Extensive post-use management and maintenance services further enhance the efficiency and longevity of the new fleet.

Since its inception, the initiative has facilitated the conversion of over 200 sanitation, urban logistics, and distribution vehicles to run on alternative energy sources. In recognition of its success, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has called for similar projects in key cities such as Beijing, Chengdu, and 13 others to promote sustainable transportation solutions.
