Fife Council’s New Initiative: Affordable Housing Programme

The latest development in Fife Council’s efforts to address the pressing need for affordable housing comes in the form of plans for 39 new council houses. The council’s cabinet committee has given the green light to a partnership with Ogilvie Homes to construct 18 new council houses at the Conscience Bridge site in Cairney Hill. Additionally, a deal with Cala Homes has been agreed upon to build an additional 21 council houses at Main St, Aberdour.

Councillor Judy Hamilton, the housing spokesperson, expressed her delight at the decision, highlighting the crucial role these new homes will play in alleviating the housing crisis. She emphasised the significance of the Affordable Housing Programme, which stands as one of the UK’s largest social house-building programmes. The continuous strain on housing services underscores the importance of such initiatives.

Each new council house is envisioned to offer its tenants a warmer, drier, and healthier living environment, ultimately contributing to their overall wellbeing. Construction work at both sites is set to commence in the near future, with the first tenants expected to move in by early 2026.

Not only does the Affordable Housing Programme address the shortage of housing, but it also plays a vital role in creating employment opportunities and apprenticeships. By supporting the construction industry and bolstering the local economy in Fife, this initiative serves as a multifaceted solution to the region’s housing challenges.
