Over 30% of English NHS Trusts fail to track carbon emissions

One in three (31%) NHS Trusts in England lack a clear roadmap to achieve net-zero targets, according to recent data.

Despite the ambitious goal set by NHS England to reduce direct emissions by 80% between 2028-2032, a significant percentage of Trusts are still heavily reliant on fossil fuels for energy.

Surprisingly, almost a third (29%) of NHS Trusts do not even measure their carbon footprint, as revealed by Freedom of Information data released by Schneider Electric, a prominent leader in energy management and automation.

The lack of measurement is reflective of the fact that 31% of the Trusts surveyed do not have a defined strategy in place to reach net-zero targets.

In response to the pressing need for a greener NHS, efforts have been made, including:

  • 60% of Trusts upgrading their building systems for increased sustainability.
  • 48% adopting technologies to monitor and optimize energy usage.
  • 19% implementing circular business practices, such as refurbishing and redistributing medical equipment, like mobility aids.

Despite these positive steps, there is still a long road ahead. Notably, 20% of NHS Trusts continue to source over 90% of their energy from fossil fuels, contributing significantly to England’s carbon footprint.

While progress is being made, with 67% of Trusts receiving funding for decarbonization initiatives, more needs to be done. The allocation of funds has been directed towards:

  • 40% investing in energy-efficient technologies and equipment, such as LED lighting and HVAC systems.
  • 34% upgrading heating, lighting, and ventilation systems.
  • 16% opting for renewable energy sources, like solar panels.
  • 12% focusing on training and awareness programmes to propel sustainable practices.

Kas Mohammed, VP Digital Energy at Schneider Electric UK & Ireland, emphasised the urgency for the NHS to transition towards sustainable practices to achieve net-zero targets while ensuring efficient patient care.

He highlighted the importance of investing in modern technologies and digital services to retrofit hospital buildings and make the NHS more sustainable for future generations.

As the nation’s pride, the NHS must tackle its energy consumption challenges to create a healthier environment for all.
