Glasgow joins Global Mayors Council on Homelessness

Glasgow has officially joined the International Mayors Council on Homelessness, a newly established forum for mayors and elected officials from cities across three continents. This commitment aims to put an end to homelessness and advocate for global action on this critical issue.

Councillor Allan Casey, the city convener for Workforce, Homelessness, and Addiction Services, recently participated in a meeting with representatives from cities such as Chicago, New York, Paris, Denver, and London. During this gathering, a joint declaration was signed, highlighting each city’s dedication to eradicating homelessness at the local, regional, and global levels. Additionally, a two-year work plan was established to guide their collaborative efforts.

The International Mayors Council on Homelessness was established in 2023 as a platform for leaders and elected officials from over a dozen cities spanning three continents. This council serves as a forum to address pressing challenges, share successful strategies, and ensure that the perspectives of cities are incorporated into the UN’s agenda.

Councillor Casey expressed Glasgow’s enthusiasm for being a part of this council, emphasizing the city’s commitment to collaborative efforts in addressing the complex issue of homelessness. Glasgow, alongside its partners, continues to enhance its response to homelessness, aiming to mitigate the significant impact it has on individuals.

He stated, “Nobody should have to endure sleeping on the streets in Glasgow. We are eager to learn from other cities on how we can improve lives and services. Through initiatives like Housing First, we are assisting the most vulnerable citizens in rebuilding their lives. The lessons learned during the global pandemic have guided us towards new approaches that focus on addressing complexity and risk, rather than just the status of homelessness.”

The International Mayors Council held its inaugural online meeting in June 2023 and has since convened virtually to engage with experts, exchange evidence-based practices, and collectively develop a declaration affirming their dedication to combating homelessness.
