London sees surge in eco-friendly deliveries.

Friday 9 August 2024

A recent study conducted in London has revealed a promising shift in the transportation sector, with businesses increasingly opting to replace traditional delivery vans with more sustainable cargo bikes. According to the study conducted by Clean Cities, there has been a significant 63 percent increase in the use of cargo bikes in London from 2022 to 2023.

The adoption of cargo bikes has proven to have a multitude of benefits, including reducing congestion on the city streets, enhancing overall business efficiency, and contributing to the creation of more liveable and healthier urban environments. As a result, campaigners and businesses in London are calling upon the Mayor to show support for the widespread adoption of cargo bikes as an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel and petrol vans.

The study reveals that the annual social and environmental cost associated with petrol and diesel vans in London amounts to a staggering £2.46 billion. In response to this growing concern, Jack Skillen, the Director of Sustainability and Place at Team London Bridge, highlighted the positive impact of over 200 businesses in the area that have already made the switch to cargo bikes. Whether it be for transporting legal documents, medical samples, office supplies, or waste, these businesses have witnessed a dramatic change that is not only beneficial for the environment but also for the community at large.

However, despite the evident benefits of cargo bikes, there are still existing barriers that hinder further progress in their widespread adoption. To continue this positive transformation across London, it is essential for key stakeholders such as the Mayor, local authorities, and national governments to come together in support of this sustainable transportation solution.

Transport for London has estimated that by 2030, cargo bikes could potentially replace up to 17 percent of vans in certain parts of London, resulting in a substantial reduction of up to 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This transition not only aligns with the city’s ambitious climate goals but also paves the way for a more sustainable future.
