London Fire Brigade cuts energy costs.
Tuesday 6th August 2024
The London Fire Brigade has once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by winning the prestigious Building Management Low Carbon Initiative Award. This accolade recognises the brigade’s innovative Energy Portal, a key component of their Building Energy Management System (BMS).
The Energy Portal, introduced in 2022, plays a crucial role in monitoring and controlling energy usage across the brigade’s 103 fire stations. Through a network of sensors, the system optimises energy efficiency, leading to a significant reduction in both costs and emissions.
One of the most impressive achievements of the Energy Portal is the 17% decrease in energy consumption recorded between April 2022 and March 2023, surpassing the initial target of 10%. Mitch Layng, Carbon and Utilities Manager at London Fire Brigade, expressed his delight at the success of the system, highlighting the positive response from staff.
Layng stated, ‘The implementation of the Energy Portal has been really successful, and we are so pleased by the response and engagement from our staff. Collectively, we all have a part to play in the fight against climate change, and the way this system has been set up allows people to do just that.’
Furthermore, Layng emphasised the brigade’s dedication to sustainability, aligning their goals with the Mayor of London’s ambitious target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. Not only does saving energy contribute to environmental preservation, but it also results in cost savings that can be reinvested into improving services.
Looking ahead, the London Fire Brigade has set a target to become net zero by 2030, reflecting their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. In a significant milestone towards this goal, the brigade unveiled its first carbon net zero fire station in Walthamstow back in 2022.
