Can Kamala Harris Lead America to Net Zero?

Wednesday 31 July 2024

American presidential hopeful Kamala Harris is anticipated to unveil a robust climate policy agenda, setting a new standard for addressing environmental concerns.

Throughout her illustrious career, American Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris has been a vocal advocate for climate solutions. In a bold move, Harris joined forces with 16 other Attorney Generals in 2016 to call out fossil fuel polluters, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to environmental protection. Notably, she spearheaded legal actions against several oil and gas companies, securing a significant $14 million (£11 million) settlement with BP for environmental damages.

During her tenure as Vice President, Harris threw her support behind the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest climate investment initiative in American history. Additionally, she pledged a substantial sum of $3 billion (£2.3 billion) to establish a climate fund aimed at assisting developing nations in combating climate change at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28).

In a poignant address at COP28, Harris emphasised the urgent need for action, stating: ‘It is clear that the clock is not only ticking, it is banging. And we must act. We have witnessed communities across our nation ravaged by droughts, floods, and hurricanes.

‘One of the critical elements missing from our strategy to combat the climate crisis is the lack of substantial investment in community-based climate initiatives. For far too long, communities have been deprived of the resources needed to implement effective climate solutions that match the scale of the crisis we are facing.’

While the specific details of Harris’ climate manifesto are yet to be unveiled, it is widely speculated that she will uphold and expand upon the progressive policies initiated during the Biden Administration. A multitude of prominent climate advocates, including over 350 prominent figures, have already voiced their support for Harris’ presidential aspirations.

Gina McCarthy, former chief climate adviser to President Biden, lauded Harris for her unwavering commitment to justice and environmental protection, stating to the Guardian: ‘[Kamala] has dedicated her entire life to championing justice, advocating for the marginalized, and ensuring that all individuals have access to clean air, clean water, and a sustainable environment. She will tirelessly fight for the well-being of all Americans.’
