A full obituary of John Ferguson MBE, the honorary president and founding member of the Parkhead Housing Association (PHA), has been featured in The Herald.
John Ferguson, a prominent figure in the community-based housing association movement, passed away at the age of 85 in June. He was described as a dedicated and proactive individual who devoted over five decades of his life to improving his community, particularly in Parkhead, Glasgow.
Mr Ferguson, born in 1939 in Parkhead, was a lifelong resident of the area. With his involvement in PHA, he played a pivotal role in the establishment and development of this community-led organisation. The association now oversees more than 1,700 homes and employs 58 staff members, effectively illustrating Mr Ferguson’s enduring legacy.
During his tenure at PHA, Mr Ferguson championed social housing and led numerous initiatives aimed at the regeneration and enhancement of the Parkhead neighbourhood. Through his unwavering commitment, he was recognised with an MBE in 2000 for his outstanding services to the housing association movement.
Aside from his contributions to PHA, Mr Ferguson was actively engaged in various other community endeavours. He served on the executive committee of Employers in Voluntary Housing (EVH) and was a board member of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA). His dedication to advocating for fair treatment of staff and workers’ rights within housing associations was widely acknowledged.
