Free school meals & clothing grants now available in Midlothian.

Applications Now Open for Free School Meals and Clothing Grants in Midlothian
Families on low incomes in Midlothian are now able to apply for free school meals and clothing grants for the upcoming school year 2024/25, providing vital support to those in need.
All children in primary 1 to 5 are automatically eligible for free school meals, but families must apply for clothing grants. Additionally, all children in early learning and childcare can receive a free meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner) on the days they attend.
For children in primary 6 or 7, free lunches are available at school if their family receives certain benefits. Families may qualify if they receive Child Tax Credit (not Working Tax Credit) and have an income below £19,995; or if they receive both Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit with an income of up to £9,552; or if they are on Universal Credit with a take-home pay of no more than £796 per month.
Moreover, families may also be eligible for financial assistance towards their child’s school clothing and shoes. School clothing grants amount to £120 for primary pupils and £150 for secondary pupils.
If families received an award for the previous school year and are on certain benefits, they will automatically receive an award letter in July, confirming their entitlement to free school meals or clothing grants. Those who did not automatically receive an award can submit an application, which is valid for one year only and must be renewed annually.
The closing date for clothing grant applications is 31st March 2025, and Midlothian Council aims to process applications within 28 days. Applicants are advised to contact the council only if they have not received a response within this timeframe.
This initiative by Midlothian Council underscores its commitment to supporting families in need and ensuring that every child has access to essential resources for their education and well-being.
