EVC blends power and charging at UK racecourses.

Electric Vehicle Charging Company (EVC) has joined forces with The Jockey Club, the UK’s largest commercial horse racing organisation, to roll out customised EV charging solutions at all 14 of its venues. This exciting partnership will see EVC, with its extensive charging network across the UK, establishing more than 100 fast and rapid (22-150kW) charging points at The Jockey Club’s sites.
The installation of chargers has already commenced at prominent venues such as Epsom Downs, Haydock Park, Exeter, and Newmarket Rowley Mile. The remaining 10 locations are scheduled to have their chargers up and running by the conclusion of 2024. In a significant development in February 2023, EVC secured a remarkable £165 million investment from Denham Sustainable Infrastructure, a division of global energy transition investment firm Denham Capital, to ramp up its plans to deliver up to 100,000 EV charge points throughout the UK.
This new alliance is geared towards future-proofing The Jockey Club’s collection of racecourses, which boast some of the nation’s most renowned sporting venues, and supporting their target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2027.
Kirstin McEvoy, the sustainability manager at The Jockey Club, expressed, “Sustainability is at the core of The Jockey Club’s ethos, aligned with our objective to preserve the heritage of our historic racecourses. This collaboration signifies a significant stride in our sustainability journey. As a sport steeped in tradition, our partnership with EVC underscores our dedication to embracing innovations that will empower us to safeguard our racecourses for the future and fulfil our net zero aspirations.”
Nick Bellamy, the CEO at EVC, remarked, “At EVC, our primary goal has always been to establish one of the most expansive destination charging networks in the UK. By facilitating rapid and convenient EV charging at each of The Jockey Club’s iconic venues, the organisation enhances its visitor experience, advances its sustainability goals, and appeals to a fresh cohort of eco-conscious racegoers and corporate hospitality clients. Nevertheless, this initiative transcends mere convenience for racing enthusiasts – it represents a strategic investment in the future of mobility, especially in regions like the Northwest of England that currently lack adequate public EV charging infrastructure.”
