Former Highlands councillor Val MacIver remembered with tributes

The Highland Council is mourning the loss of former councillor Val MacIver, who passed away on Wednesday 17 July 2024. Val served as an independent councillor for the Ferindonald Ward in Ross and Cromarty Area of The Highland Council. She first took office in 1995 and was re-elected in 2003, following her previous role as a Highland Regional Councillor for Ferindonald in 1990.

Val made significant contributions during her tenure, particularly in the realm of education. She chaired the Highland Regional Council’s education committee and played a pivotal role in the establishment of the University of the Highlands and Islands in 1991. Val continued her leadership in education by chairing the Highland Council’s education committee in 1995, along with serving as the chair of Ross and Cromarty area education committee and vice chair of Ross and Cromarty area cultural and leisure committee.

After retiring from The Highland Council in 1999, Val made a comeback in 2003, representing the Ferindonald Ward once again. During this term, she was appointed as the chair of Highland Council’s Ross and Cromarty area planning, development Europe, and tourism committee. Val was actively involved in various committees, including housing and social work, policy and resources, finance personnel, planning, and property committees. She also dedicated her time to serving on the police board.

Reflecting on Val’s passing, Convener of The Highland Council, Cllr Bill Lobban, expressed his deep sadness. He acknowledged Val’s continued interest in council affairs even after her retirement, often attending planning committee meetings in the council chamber. Cllr Lobban extended his heartfelt condolences to Val’s family and friends on behalf of The Highland Council members and staff.

Val MacIver leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service to the Highland community. Her commitment to education and local governance has left an indelible mark on the region, and her presence will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
