Colonsay to Deliver Homes in Scalasaig

The Colonsay Community Development Company (CCDC) has exciting news to share with the community – the first phase of its new housing project at Scalasaig, Colonsay, is set to be handed over later this summer. This development includes a variety of 2 and 3-bedroom homes, with four homes available for affordable rent, two for discounted sale, and three for local workers. In addition, there are three serviced self-build plots for sale, providing opportunities for individuals to create their dream home.

Not only does this project focus on housing, but it also includes two commercial business units that will not only create local employment but also help existing businesses grow and new ones establish themselves. CCDC has plans for further phases of affordable housing to be delivered in the future, solidifying their commitment to the community’s growth and sustainability.

The impact of this development goes beyond just providing housing; it will enhance living conditions, increase school enrollment, reduce fuel poverty, and bolster the local economy by supporting the retention and growth of the resident population. This is a significant step in addressing the challenges faced by many rural communities, particularly with declining populations and inadequate affordable housing.

CCDC’s primary goal is to provide homes for individuals who see a long-term future on the island and who can actively contribute to community life. They are keen on attracting new residents who may be interested in moving to the island for employment opportunities, business ventures, or to utilize their essential skills. Families with children, individuals supporting current residents, and those with a strong connection to Colonsay or Oronsay are given priority in the housing allocation process.

The development is strategically located near essential amenities like the Colonsay Hotel, ferry terminal, village shop, hall, pier, and cafes. With easy access to key facilities, residents will have everything they need within walking distance, promoting a close-knit and thriving community atmosphere.

Support for this project has come from various sources, including funding from the Scottish Government’s Rural & Islands Housing Fund, Scottish Land Fund, Argyle and Bute Council, as well as industry partners MOWI and HIE. These collaborations demonstrate the shared commitment to the success of this development and the positive impact it will have on the local community.

Excitingly, allocations have already been made to five households, securing homes for all the rented properties and one of the homes for sale. This progress marks a significant milestone in the journey towards revitalizing the island community and ensuring a sustainable future for Colonsay and Oronsay.
