Midlothian calls for ideas in new development plan

The Midlothian Council has recently launched a Call for Ideas and Opportunities as part of their preparations for the upcoming Local Development Plan for the area, known as MLDP2. This plan will play a vital role in shaping the development and use of land in the area from 2026 to 2036, paving the way for the future growth and sustainability of Midlothian.
Through MLDP2, the Council aims to allocate sites for development, identify areas to be safeguarded, and establish the policies that will guide planning decisions. The Call for Ideas and Opportunities invites individuals, communities, landowners, developers, businesses, or any other interested parties to contribute their thoughts, suggestions, and proposals for inclusion in MLDP2.
This call is a unique opportunity for stakeholders to share their vision for the future use of land in Midlothian. Whether it be ideas for new housing, employment opportunities, infrastructure projects, community facilities, green spaces, nature conservation, or renewable energy initiatives, all suggestions are welcome.
If you are part of a community group that has already submitted a Local Place Plan (LPP), there is no obligation to provide additional information. However, you are welcome to do so if you wish. The Council will carefully consider proposals outlined in the submitted LPPs and encourages communities that missed the deadline for the Evidence Report to participate in the Call for Ideas and Opportunities.
The submission period for ideas and suggestions is now open and will continue until 1st October 2024. To submit your proposal, you can use the online forms available on the Midlothian Council website. For those unable to use the online platform, alternative submission methods are available via email at ldp@midlothian.gov.uk or by leaving a voice message at 0131 271 3302.
Paper copies of the submission forms can also be found at Midlothian libraries for those who prefer a physical copy. The Council does not require extensive detail in submissions unless proposing a development site, with the provided questions guiding the information needed. Proposals affecting specific locations must be accompanied by a map clearly indicating the site or area in question.
All ideas submitted will be carefully reviewed by the Council and will play a crucial role in shaping the writing of the Proposed Plan. Further engagement on the Proposed Plan will follow after October 2024, leading to the publication of the Proposed Plan for formal consultation in July 2025.
