Mer installs fast chargers at historic site

Mer, the EV charging firm, has joined hands with Dean Clough to introduce cutting-edge ultra-rapid EV chargers at its iconic 22-acre mixed-use mill complex in Halifax.

Eager to promote sustainable transportation, Dean Clough had initially set up EV charge points on its premises. However, the latest collaboration with Mer marks the debut of ultra-rapid charging facilities at the venue. Eight charging sockets are set to go live for public use, incorporating load balancing technology to optimise power consumption efficiently and sustainably.

Steeped in history, Dean Clough boasts 16 Grade II listed Victorian mills that were erected between 1840-1870. These mills were formerly the headquarters of Crossley Carpets, the world’s largest carpet manufacturers until their closure in 1982. Subsequently, in 1983, Dean Clough, under private family ownership, embarked on the ambitious journey of restoring these architectural gems.

Alex Hinchcliffe, the managing director at Mer UK, expressed, “Our collaboration with Dean Clough exemplifies how heritage sites can be modernized without compromising their authentic charm. By partnering with us for the installation of EV charge points, the company showcases its progressive outlook. We trust that the inclusion of Mer chargers at this vibrant community hub will encourage a shift towards sustainable driving choices, empowering local drivers to transition to EVs.”

The unique circumstances posed by the estate’s listed status presented challenges during the planning and installation of the charging infrastructure.

Mer, in close collaboration with the estate owners, efficiently executed the project while grappling with obstacles such as underground streams and mines – all the while preserving the site’s historical significance.

Jeremy Hall, the chairman and managing director of Dean Clough, remarked, “Having personally experienced the shortage of ultra-rapid chargers in our vicinity, I am confident that this provision will greatly benefit not only the Dean Clough community but also the wider populace of Halifax and Calderdale. The ongoing developments at Dean Clough are truly exciting, and the addition of these charging facilities further enhances the value and allure of the site.”
