East Airdrie expands, adding 3,000 new homes

Former mining land to the east of Airdrie has been earmarked for a significant mixed-use expansion, bringing about exciting developments for the Central Belt town, as well as the construction of the East Airdrie Link Road.

The proposal seeks planning permission for a diverse development that includes residential, commercial, and leisure facilities. Additionally, the expanded area may house a hotel and a primary school, making it a truly integrated community.

Bidwells, the development company behind the project, envisions constructing up to 3,000 modern homes within a ‘green grid’ framework. These homes will be part of various mixed-use neighbourhoods bordered by Darngavil Road, Dykehead Road, Airdriehill Road, and Ballochney Road, as reported by Urban Realm.

In their masterplan statement, Bidwells explained: “The opening of the East Airdrie Link Road necessitates a reassessment of the current industrial land designations in light of enhanced connectivity. This planning application is an essential step in providing a strategic roadmap for the site’s future development.”

Out of the total 383-hectare site, 75 hectares will be dedicated to public green spaces interconnected by a network of pedestrian and cycling paths. The gradual implementation of this ambitious project is anticipated to span from 2026 to 2039, showcasing a thoughtful and sustainable approach to growth in the region.
