Total and SSE team up to launch new EV charging brand with goal of 20% market share.

TotalEnergies and SSE have teamed up to revolutionise the EV charging scene in the UK and Ireland with the launch of their new venture, ‘Source’.

Their ambitious plan involves the deployment of up to 3,000 ultra-rapid charge points, delivering 150kW and higher, spread across both countries. These charging points will be strategically clustered in 300 EV hubs, with a bold aim of capturing a 20% market share.

Set to be strategically positioned in key urban areas, these hubs will be powered by sustainable energy sources provided by SSE and TotalEnergies. While some hubs are already in the construction phase, there are plans for many more hubs in the pipeline, currently in the development stages.

The collaboration between SSE and TotalEnergies is a response to the increasing demand from EV and fleet owners for fast and reliable charging solutions. The implementation of the ZEV mandate this year has highlighted the pressing need for robust power supply infrastructure for EVs and fleets, posing one of the greatest challenges to achieving transport decarbonisation.

In Ireland, Source’s initiatives align with the Government’s goal to see nearly one million electric vehicles on the roads by 2030. By enhancing consumer confidence in EV charging, Source aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the country.

Mathieu Soulas, senior vice president of new mobilities at TotalEnergies, expressed his excitement about the venture, stating, “This collaboration provides us with a unique opportunity to expand our network across Europe and establish ourselves as a leading high-power charging provider. Our aim is to offer both passenger cars and fleet vehicles a premium, ultra-fast and reliable charging service nationwide, ensuring seamless and efficient travel for our customers. This initiative also contributes to our comprehensive power strategy in the UK, integrating renewable energy sources, flexible power generation capacity, and the trading of low-carbon electricity round the clock.”

Neil Kirkby, the managing director of enterprise at SSE, echoed the sentiment, saying, “SSE is already at the forefront of decarbonising the power systems in the UK and Ireland, with groundbreaking projects like the world’s largest offshore wind farm and the transformation of electricity networks. This partnership will further accelerate our journey towards a sustainable transport system, enabling vehicles to operate in a more eco-friendly and efficient manner, supporting the economy while reducing carbon emissions.”

Lilian Greenwood, the newly appointed Future of Roads Minister, commended the Source initiative, calling it a game-changer in the UK’s transition to electric vehicles. Highlighting the Government’s commitment to greener transportation, she stressed the importance of collaboration between the public sector and industry to build consumer trust through reliable and widespread electric vehicle charging infrastructure, ultimately aiming to increase the number of electric vehicles on the roads.
