Bield contract boosts community with apprenticeships.

Bield has recently awarded a substantial £4.5 million multi-trade repairs contract to Lanarkshire-based Rodgers & Johnston Ltd (R&J), marking the beginning of an exciting four-year partnership. This collaboration will encompass responsive repairs, void property works, and out-of-hours emergency repairs in the West and Central regions of Scotland.

One notable aspect of this agreement is the implementation of a community benefit clause by the housing provider. This clause acts as a driving force behind supporting local youth and nurturing their growth within the industry. It necessitates the maintenance contractor to not only deliver their services but also provide a range of economic, social, and environmental benefits to the local community.

As part of this initiative, new apprentices are being recruited from the area where the company operates. These apprentices will receive hands-on experience while contributing to the upkeep of properties, paving the way for fulfilling careers in housing repairs and maintenance.

Amongst the new apprentices is Ross Leonard, an 18-year-old graduate from Larkhall Academy. Ross expressed his enthusiasm for developing his career at R&J, stating, “I am looking forward to developing my career with R&J and contributing to the community where I grew up. My plumbing apprenticeship will allow me to develop practical skills while giving back to the local area.”

Ross will primarily focus on plumbing repairs and installations as part of his responsibilities under the renewed contract, gaining valuable experience and showcasing his skills in the process. Greg Johnston, the director of R&J, shared his excitement about the continued partnership: “We are thrilled to have secured this multi-trade contract and to continue our successful collaboration with Bield. Our commitment to customer service closely aligns with the values of Bield, and we are eager to implement the new community benefits outlined in this contract.”

Having already spanned over 15 years, this enduring partnership between Bield and R&J has proven to be beneficial for all parties involved, fostering a spirit of community development and empowering the next generation of skilled tradespeople. Drew Moore, Bield’s director of Assets, highlighted the extensive impact of the contract renewal: “We are excited about extending this long-term partnership, which greatly benefits our communities. We recognise the significance of day-to-day repairs for our tenants, and we are eager for the opportunities this contract will bring not only to them but also to the young individuals aspiring to excel and advance in their careers.”
