Scotland’s Riverside Housing Association Wins Energy Efficiency Award

Affordable housing provider Riverside Scotland has proudly clinched the coveted title of Housing Association of the Year at the prestigious 2024 Scotland Energy Efficiency Awards. This esteemed recognition is a testament to the association’s unwavering dedication to energy efficiency, exemplified by an extensive renovation programme across nearly 300 homes in Dumfries and Galloway.

The commendable works programme, spearheaded by Union Technical Services based in Glasgow, featured the implementation of an innovative internal wall insulation system specifically tailored for solid wall sandstone properties. This cutting-edge system not only diminishes heat demand but also leads to a notable reduction in energy bills for residents.

Furthermore, the project saw the installation of new ventilation systems aimed at enhancing air quality and eradicating damp and mould issues. Cavity wall insulation was also incorporated to further diminish heat demand, coupled with the application of a liquid damp proof course to bolster energy efficiency and safeguard the homes.

Riverside Scotland additionally equipped the homes with Switchee smart thermostats, offering residents the ability to optimise their energy consumption. This integration not only results in a potential decrease of up to 17% in heating bills but also empowers individuals to monitor and regulate energy usage remotely, even when they are away from home.

Recognised as a valuable initiative amidst the prevalent cost-of-living challenges faced by households, the investment serves as a significant alleviation for tenants. Moreover, it aligns with the Scottish Government’s ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2045.

Heather Duff, the head of asset and sustainability, along with Stephen McCarthy, the asset operations manager, graciously accepted the accolade at the esteemed venue of Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza. Heather articulated her pride in the project’s positive impact on tenants and expressed Riverside Scotland’s unwavering commitment to enhancing customer homes through a comprehensive whole-house retrofit approach.

Heather remarked, “It’s truly gratifying to receive recognition for our project at this prestigious level. We take immense pride in the work we undertake to ensure our customers benefit from warmer, more comfortable homes while concurrently reducing their energy expenditure. This endeavour undoubtedly provides a much-needed boost for our tenants amidst the ongoing cost-of-living challenges.”

“Riverside Scotland ardently remains dedicated to enhancing our customers’ living spaces in the forthcoming years through a holistic retrofit strategy, and we eagerly anticipate collaborating with Union Technical Services on forthcoming projects,” she added.
