Boost Rural Prosperity with New Housing

Dorset Council has made a significant announcement during Rural Housing Week, revealing that more than 500 affordable homes have been constructed in various communities over the past financial year. This positive development includes a mix of rented and shared ownership properties, catering to the needs of residents in rural villages throughout the county. The project was a collaborative effort between the council and its partners, with a substantial amount of financial support coming from Homes England.

This crucial initiative to enhance affordable housing provision has received backing from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Through a collaborative approach, a Rural Enabling Housing Officer sponsored by DEFRA now assists the council’s Housing Enabling and Delivery Team on a weekly basis. This support is part of a broader strategy aimed at bolstering affordable housing options in rural areas and preventing the exodus of rural workers and their families due to escalating house prices and rent.

Andrew Billany, the Corporate Director for Housing at Dorset Council, emphasised the importance of ensuring local communities have access to affordable housing. He stated, “Our villages and rural communities need to have homes that are affordable for local people. At Dorset Council, in collaboration with our partners, we are dedicated to fulfilling this need. Rural Housing Week serves as a timely reminder of our unwavering commitment to expanding the availability of affordable homes across the Dorset Council area.”

Billany further stressed the fundamental role that adequate housing plays in enabling Dorset residents and families to lead fulfilling lives. He affirmed, “An affordable and decent home is essential for Dorset people and families to live well and thrive. This holds true for both our villages and our towns, which is why we are proud to support Rural Housing Week in championing this cause.”

Looking ahead, Dorset Council has plans to complete additional housing projects in the near future, further solidifying its dedication to meeting the housing needs of rural communities.
