99 New Homes Given Green Light at Leith’s Former Industrial Site

The City of Edinburgh Council has given the green light for an exciting new development in Leith, with plans for 99 new homes and two commercial units to be constructed on a former industrial site. This redevelopment project will see the transformation of two empty low-rise industrial buildings and a carpet store building on Salamander Street and Salamander Yards in Edinburgh.

The innovative design for this project was crafted by 7N Architects, working on behalf of Cruden Homes (East) Ltd. The new homes will cater to a variety of needs, with 20% of them specifically designed for families requiring three bedrooms, in compliance with Edinburgh’s design guidelines. Additionally, an impressive 35% of the homes will be designated as affordable housing, addressing the growing need for accessible accommodation in the area.

The development will feature a central south-facing courtyard, offering a private and accessible outdoor space for all residents. This courtyard will also establish a visual connection to the lush greenery of Leith Links, enhancing the natural landscape of the area. The U-shaped design of the building has been carefully planned to provide stunning views across Leith Links towards the city, while the facades of the building have been thoughtfully crafted to harmonize with the surrounding environments.

As part of the project, Salamander Street is set to undergo a realignment to accommodate a segregated cycle path in line with the Leith Connections initiative. This will not only promote sustainable modes of transportation but also foster a more bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly environment in the neighbourhood.

Overall, this development promises to breathe new life into the former industrial site, creating a vibrant and sustainable community for residents to thrive in. With a focus on inclusivity, green spaces, and connectivity, the project exemplifies the innovative and forward-thinking approach to urban planning in Edinburgh.
