New Nyobolt EV prototype trials in UK

Nyobolt embarks on a groundbreaking journey as it integrates its high-power density, fast-charging battery technology into an electric vehicle prototype. This remarkable innovation, developed in collaboration with CALLUM, aims to test and validate the battery’s performance in a high-performance setting.

The hallmark of Nyobolt’s technology is its ability to achieve an 80% charge in just five minutes. Launched in 2019 and headquartered in Cambridge, Nyobolt utilises cutting-edge carbon and metal oxide anode materials, alongside a low impedance cell design, integrated power electronics, and sophisticated software controls to create powerful and efficient battery and charging systems.

An outstanding feature of Nyobolt’s technology is its promise to halt degradation. The 24.5Ah cells have undergone over 4,000 full Depth of Discharge (DoD) fast charge cycles, equivalent to a staggering 600,000 miles. Independent testing conducted by OEMs has further validated the exceptional performance of its 2.6Ah cells, demonstrating over 4,400 cycles with a 12C charge and 1C discharge at 23°C.

Dr Sai Shivareddy, the co-founder and CEO of Nyobolt, explains, “While certain OEMs tout fast charge times of around 15 minutes, a closer examination reveals that the charge typically covers a limited State of Charge (SOC) range to preserve the cell’s longevity – usually between 20-80%. Most of the charge time is spent at these peak charge levels, but Nyobolt’s low impedance cells ensure sustainability, extending the battery’s usable lifespan to an impressive 600,000 miles in our technology demonstrator.”

In a remarkable feat, the 35kWh battery pack incorporated into the Nyobolt EV prototype weighs just 1,250kg. Shane Davies, Nyobolt’s director of vehicle battery systems, envisions a future where OEMs can rekindle excitement in the automotive sector burdened by outdated battery technologies.

“Our Nyobolt EV showcases the efficiency gains made possible by our fast-charging, long-lasting battery technology, allowing for optimal capacity without compromising performance. We are eliminating the barriers of slow and inconvenient charging, making electrification appealing and practical for individuals with limited time for charging or space for a home charger,” Shane Davies elaborates.

With Nyobolt’s pioneering advancements in battery technology, the electrification landscape is poised for a transformative shift towards sustainability and efficiency. As the world strives towards achieving net-zero emissions, Nyobolt’s innovative solutions pave the way for a greener and more accessible future.
