Charity manager stole £40k through bookkeeping fraud

Breaking News: Charity Manager Embezzles £40k from Vulnerable Residents
In a shocking turn of events, Violet Connor, a 67-year-old manager from Glenrothes, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for embezzling just over £40,000 from vulnerable residents at a social care charity, Sense Scotland.
The theft occurred over a three-year period, with Connor admitting to stealing money from the bank accounts of Sense Scotland users between April 2019 and December 2022.
Helen Nisbet, Procurator Fiscal for Tayside, Central, and Fife, expressed her outrage, stating, “This offence was committed against some of the most vulnerable in our community and was a very serious breach of trust. We will always prosecute in such cases where there is evidence to do so.”
Connor, who held the position of locality manager at Sense Scotland, was authorised to withdraw specific amounts of cash for 10 service users. She would then record these transactions in a manual paper ledger system at the charity, which provides care for vulnerable adults and children facing challenges such as deafness, blindness, or learning difficulties. These withdrawals typically occurred once or twice a month.
The embezzlement came to light in October 2022 when a bookkeeping discrepancy was noticed while Connor was on compassionate leave following a family bereavement. Her interim replacement discovered the irregularities while balancing finance folders for service users overseen by the accused.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that Connor had made excessive withdrawals totalling £40,060 from the accounts of residents. Company officials were alerted, leading to an internal inquiry and Connor now facing confiscation action under Proceeds of Crime legislation.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of trust and integrity in positions of authority, especially when dealing with vulnerable individuals. The repercussions of such actions not only impact the victims directly but also tarnish the reputation of the organization involved.
