Bid to declare Dundee housing emergency blocked again.

Dundee City Council has once again found itself at odds with calls to declare a local housing emergency after its bid was blocked for the second time. Last month, councillors rejected an initial attempt to make the declaration, just days before the Scottish Government announced a nationwide housing emergency.

The opposition group within the council has urged the administration to reconsider its decision, highlighting the importance of aligning with the government’s stance on this pressing issue. Labour group leader Kevin Keenan requested a suspension of standing orders to allow for a debate on declaring a housing crisis.

However, council rules dictate a six-month gap before a motion can be brought back for reconsideration. Despite this, reports from The Courier reveal that the SNP administration has once again dismissed the bid at a recent committee meeting.

Councillor Keenan did not hold back in criticizing the decision, denouncing it as “single-minded politics.” He emphasised the urgency of addressing housing concerns in the city, citing the overwhelming public correspondence on the matter.

“The SNP administration, despite their own government acknowledging a housing emergency, refused to facilitate a debate on this crucial issue,” said Mr Keenan. “Housing remains a top priority for the citizens of Dundee, and it is essential that our council acts in their best interests.”

With Scotland facing a housing crisis on a national scale, it is imperative for local authorities like Dundee City Council to be proactive in addressing the challenges faced by residents in need of adequate housing solutions.

As the debate continues within the council chambers, it is evident that finding common ground and taking decisive action are crucial steps towards ensuring that the housing needs of the community are met effectively.

It remains to be seen whether the council will reconsider its position in the future, but one thing is certain – the issue of housing emergency declaration will continue to be a topic of significant importance for the residents of Dundee.
