Linthouse Housing Association opens new community shop.

A new community shop has been launched by Linthouse Housing Association, providing a much-needed low-cost shopping option for families in the G51 postcode area. This exciting development, in collaboration with Good Food Scotland and Feeding Britain, aims to tackle the issue of food insecurity and rising living costs in the local community.

Located at 1121 Govan Road, the shop offers a wide range of affordable food and household products to residents for just £1 a month membership fee. The initiative is set to make a significant impact by providing access to essential items at prices lower than those found in supermarkets.

Chief executive of Linthouse Housing Association, Irene C McFarlane, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, describing it as a “game changer” in addressing hunger and supporting food dignity in the area. The prime location of the community shop ensures accessibility for local people, further strengthening its impact on the community.

The partnership between Linthouse Housing Association, Good Food Scotland, Feeding Britain, and BAe Systems has been crucial in bringing this initiative to life. Financial support and staff contributions from various organisations have played a vital role in the establishment of the community shop.

Initially operating on Thursdays from 10 am to 1 pm, the shop aims to expand its opening hours based on the anticipated high demand from residents. A diverse range of products, including household essentials, fresh produce, pet supplies, and baby items, are available for purchase, catering to the varied needs of the community.

Good Food Scotland, with its mission to end hunger in Scotland, has been instrumental in supporting communities with access to affordable food. The organisation’s chair, Chris Stephens, commended the collaborative efforts of partners in making the community shop a reality.

Andrew Forsey OBE, the national director of Feeding Britain, highlighted the significance of the project in helping residents manage their budgets effectively and reducing reliance on food banks. The Linthouse Community Shop embodies the spirit of co-operation and community support, revitalising the tradition of affordable, high-quality goods for local residents.

Support from other Linthouse contractors, including Timetra, CCG, and the Bell Group, has further bolstered the success of the project. Their contributions have been integral in ensuring the smooth operation and impact of the community shop in the G51 area.

Overall, the launch of the Linthouse Community Shop marks a significant milestone in addressing food insecurity and providing affordable shopping options for residents. The collaborative efforts of various organisations and the support of the local community have paved the way for a sustainable solution to combatting hunger and rising living costs in the area.
