EV and AWEnergy join forces for onshore wind

Welcome to the Net Zero Club News Network, where we bring you the latest updates on sustainable energy solutions and innovations. Today, we are thrilled to share an exciting collaboration between Vital EV Solutions and AWEnergy in a strategic partnership to drive the advancement of electric vehicles powered by renewable energy sources.

This groundbreaking project has led to the establishment of an EV charging station located near AWGroup’s state-of-the-art Checkley Wood onshore wind turbine. The station features 14 high-speed EV charging points, meticulously designed by Vital EV to meet the growing demand for electric vehicle infrastructure.

Operating at up to 1000v with a total charging capacity of 900kW, the site is equipped to scale up to 1.6MW and provide 300kW of charging power to a single connector. This cutting-edge facility caters not only to the general public but also to bus and heavy goods vehicle charging needs, strategically positioned near the A5 Trunk Road between Dunstable and Milton Keynes.

The cornerstone of this initiative is the 4.1MW onshore wind turbine at Checkley Wood, which began generating electricity in January 2024. With impressive 56-meter-long blades and a total rotor diameter of 115 meters, the turbine has the capacity to produce over 10,150,000 kWh annually – sufficient to facilitate more than 225,000 rapid charges for electric vehicles each year.

One of the key innovations in this project is AWEnergy’s direct wire technology, which enables power to be supplied directly from the wind turbine to the EV charging station. This innovative approach ensures a seamless and sustainable energy transfer process, further enhancing the environmental benefits of the project.

Alex Rae, Managing Director of Vital EV Solutions, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “When AWEnergy approached us to collaborate on this innovative solution, we were thrilled to contribute our expertise to design a sustainable EV charging hub. The direct wire technology from the turbine marks a significant advancement in the EV charging sector, and we are proud to be part of this initiative.”

John Fairlie, Managing Director of AWRenewables, highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, “The launch of the UK’s first electric vehicle charging station powered by on-site wind energy marks a pivotal moment for both the renewable energy and electric vehicle industries. We are grateful for the partnership with Vital EV and their unwavering commitment to our shared vision of sustainability.”

This historic investment underscores AWGroup’s dedication to delivering environmentally friendly, reliable, and cost-effective energy solutions that play a crucial role in the UK’s transition towards sustainability. The collaboration between Vital EV Solutions and AWEnergy sets a new standard for innovative sustainable energy projects and paves the way for a greener future.
