Demand for rent arrears advice soars by 56% at CAS.

Increasing Housing Debt Worries in Scotland
More and more individuals in Scotland are grappling with housing debt, as the cost of living and energy crises exacerbate the issue, according to Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS).
Recent data from the charity reveals a concerning 56% surge in individuals seeking advice on rent arrears in Registered Social Landlord properties in the year leading up to May 2024. Scottish Citizens Advice Bureaus have also noted a significant uptick in demand for guidance on local authority rent arrears over the past year, with a 51% increase.
CAS Social Justice spokesperson Aoife Deery expressed her dismay, stating: “These increases in rent arrears advice are shocking. At the same time that the Scottish Government has declared a ‘housing emergency,’ our data shows that more people are grappling with the affordability of housing, leading to a rise in housing debt.”
Deery further added, “The consequences of this debt can have a devastating impact on individuals. We often encounter individuals seeking assistance with housing issues who also require help with benefits, utilities, and other forms of debt.”
She emphasised, “While we welcome the protections the Housing Bill introduced by the Scottish Government will provide for tenants, there is a pressing need for action on affordable housing.”
Offering a proactive solution, Deery encouraged individuals facing financial concerns regarding rent, bills, or mortgages to seek advice from the Citizens Advice network. She highlighted the resources available on their website, www.MoneyMap.scot, which offers various options to boost income or reduce expenses. The online advice pages on their website offer trustworthy information on housing rights.
Deery reassured, “Our advice is free, confidential, and impartial. We aim to assist without judgment and offer a helping hand to those in need.”
