Architect wins top award for North Gate project.

The Architectural Excellence of North Gate Social Housing Project Recognised at RIAS Awards 2024

At the prestigious 2024 Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Awards, the winners of the special category awards have been unveiled, with a remarkable Glasgow social housing development standing out for its outstanding design and purpose.

James Brimble, from the architecture firm Page\Park, emerged as one of the five esteemed winners in the special category awards for his remarkable work on the North Gate Social Housing project in Glasgow. He was honoured with the Project Architect of the Year award, graciously sponsored by Equitone.

North Gate stands as a beacon of innovation in social housing, located on the vibrant south side of Glasgow. Specifically crafted to cater to the needs of older residents, the project has been lauded by judges for its thoughtful design approach. James Brimble’s unwavering dedication and fervour were highlighted, demonstrating a deep commitment to creating a space that residents hold in high regard.

Ardoch, Ballater, Aberdeenshire by Moxon Architects

A picturesque hillside farmstead with views of the River Dee underwent a comprehensive decade-long restoration project, resulting in a magnificent transformation. The judges commended the meticulously detailed interiors, crafted through collaboration with local artisans, creating a captivating and intricate space.

Client of the Year Award – sponsored by TSA Scotland
The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, by Reiach and Hall Architects

Edinburgh’s renowned Fruitmarket Gallery underwent a thoughtful refurbishment and extension, incorporating a neighbouring warehouse building to enhance the gallery experience. The client was praised for their collaborative spirit in challenging conventional art display norms, working closely with architects to redefine how art is exhibited and appreciated.

Timber Award – sponsored by Scottish Forestry/Confor
Simon Square, Edinburgh by Fraser/Livingstone Architects

A modest housing development nestled within an old builder’s yard in Edinburgh’s eclectic Southside showcased innovative design using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). The exposed timber structure created a serene and natural ambiance, setting a new standard for tenement design in Scotland.

Architectural Heritage Award – sponsored by VELUX
The Burrell Collection, Glasgow by John McAslan + Partners

The iconic Burrell Collection in Glasgow underwent a major renovation, enhancing spatial flow and preserving the building’s architectural essence. Judges commended the meticulous attention to detail, seamlessly blending contemporary design elements with the timeless architectural language of the building.

Tamsie Thomson, the Chief Executive of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, expressed gratitude towards the sponsors of the special category awards – Laurence McIntosh, Equitone, TSA Scotland, Forestry Scotland/Confor, and VELUX – for their valuable support. These special awards celebrate exceptional architects and clients behind Scotland’s finest new buildings, showcasing excellence in interior design, heritage preservation, and sustainable timber use.

Thomson emphasized, “The RIAS Awards are a testament to Scotland’s architectural prowess, and the special category awards further honour buildings that epitomize excellence. Congratulations to this year’s winners for their remarkable achievements.”
