Perth & Kinross Housing Strategy Progress Report Soon

Perth & Kinross Council is making great strides in achieving their five-year Local Housing Strategy (LHS), with a progress report set to be presented to councillors on Wednesday 19th June. This strategy, spanning from 2022 to 2027, aims to provide high-quality housing and housing services to local residents, forging the vision of what homes and communities should aspire to be over the next five years.
One of the key highlights of the report is the delivery of 174 additional homes for affordable rent in the year 2023/24. This milestone includes 141 homes for social rented housing and 33 for mid-market rent, showcasing the council’s commitment to providing a diverse range of housing options that cater to various income levels.
Moreover, the council’s efforts to address housing challenges are evident in their acquisition of 48 ex-council homes to bolster the housing stock. Additionally, through initiatives like the Empty Homes Initiative, 20 vacant properties have been repurposed to provide accommodation for individuals in need.
During a time of rising living costs, the council has stepped in to support 2,635 households in sustaining their tenancy through various financial assistance programs. From the Tenancy Sustainment Fund to the Financial Inclusion Project and the Think Yes budget, these initiatives have played a crucial role in preventing homelessness and ensuring housing stability for vulnerable individuals.
Furthermore, the council’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for residents is evident in their investment of £725,000 towards minor and major adaptations for tenants. By providing necessary modifications to homes, individuals can maintain their independence and continue residing in familiar surroundings for longer periods.
Environmental sustainability is also at the forefront of the council’s agenda, with initiatives like the Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT) service in collaboration with SCARF. This service offers free energy efficiency advice to households, resulting in cost savings, reduced carbon emissions, and the alleviation of residents from fuel poverty.
Looking ahead, the council has outlined their priorities for the upcoming year, including the ambitious target of delivering 1,050 new homes by 2027. This commitment underscores their dedication to expanding housing options and meeting the evolving needs of the community.
Members of the Housing and Social Wellbeing Committee will deliberate on the progress achieved in 2023/24 and are poised to endorse the list of priorities set for the ensuing 12 months. Through collaborative efforts and strategic planning, Perth & Kinross Council is on track to realise their vision of inclusive, sustainable, and thriving communities.
