Stagecoach partners with GridBeyond for EV fleet energy management.

Smart energy company GridBeyond will be supporting Stagecoach, the largest bus operator in the UK, to optimize the energy consumption of its electric vehicle fleet and integrate renewable energy into their business strategy.

This exciting new partnership will enable Stagecoach to participate in the Capacity Market from October 2024, opening up numerous opportunities to support the grid and achieve their energy transition goals.

The Capacity Market plays a crucial role in ensuring a reliable electricity supply to meet peaks in demand, protecting against potential blackouts if renewable sources experience a shortfall in generation. By engaging in the Capacity Market, Stagecoach will be aiding the grid during high-risk periods of potential system stress events while simultaneously lowering the overall cost of transitioning their fleet to electric vehicles through revenues generated by participation.

Electric vehicle fleets are rapidly expanding in several of the world’s largest markets. This growth is being pushed by governments and operators who see electric vehicles as a vital technology to reduce oil consumption, combat climate change, and address air pollution issues.

As bus companies continue to increase their operational electric vehicle fleets, new opportunities arise to utilize this load not only as consumers but also as contributors to the power grid and its decarbonization efforts by integrating renewable energy sources.

Head of EV Solutions at GridBeyond, Michael Kent, commented: “There are numerous opportunities for EV fleet operators to support the grid and play a pivotal role in driving the energy transition. We are excited to collaborate with Stagecoach and kickstart the Capacity Market programme. The long-term contract is a testament to GridBeyond’s expertise and capabilities.”

Tony Cockcroft, Director of Asset Management & Infrastructure at Stagecoach, added: “We are delighted to partner with GridBeyond as we forge ahead with our ambitious fleet decarbonisation plan. Leveraging GridBeyond’s energy market expertise will allow us to maximize the value of our substantial investment in our electric fleet.”
