Five low-cost housing projects nominated for Scottish Design Awards.
The excitement is building as we approach the Scottish Design Awards 2024, with the announcement of the nominees sending ripples of anticipation through the architecture and design community. The event, scheduled for 27 June, promises to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions made to this field.
Among the finalists in the Affordable Housing category are five outstanding projects that have caught the eye and captured the imagination:
Ellengowan (Phase 1), Dundee
Company: Collective Architecture
Client: Hillcrest Homes
Ellengowan Regeneration is a transformative project that replaces 124 identical 2-bedroom cottage flats in a popular residential area. Originally built in the 1920s as a temporary solution to a housing shortage, these properties were still in use nearly 100 years later. The new development offers 130 affordable housing units, including amenity housing for elderly residents, mainstream and wheelchair flats, cottage flats, family terraced houses, and a corner shop. Situated between Arbroath Road and Broughty Ferry Road, this project required a sensitive design approach to blend seamlessly with the surroundings.
Watson Street, Glasgow
Company: Collective Architecture, CCG (Scotland), G3 Consulting Engineers, Hully & Kirkwood, Sandy Brown Acoustics, Astute Fire
Client: Wheatley Homes / Lowther Homes
Located on the Eastern edge of the Merchant City conservation area, this development by Wheatley Homes Glasgow provides much-needed affordable housing in the mid-market rent sector. The modern 1 and 2 bed flats are strategically placed close to amenities and transportation links, offering a balanced living environment in Glasgow. The design of this compact site focused on creating a high-density, car-free development that harmonises with the historic surroundings, adding to the visual appeal of the area.
Carrick Street, Ayr
Company: ARPL Architects
Client: Ayrshire Housing
This project offers low energy town centre housing tailored for elderly residents seeking convenience and community engagement. With 31 new one and two-bedroom flats, the design prioritises creating a welcoming and safe environment that fosters interaction among residents and connections with the outside world. By focusing on town centre homes, this development aligns with government strategies to revitalise local town centres by increasing residents and injecting new life into the area.
Bedford Street, Glasgow
Company: Anderson Bell + Christie
Client: Anderson Bell + Christie
This development of 24 flats for social rent in the Laurieston regeneration area plays a crucial role in bridging the historical and modern elements of the city. The design seamlessly integrates the new housing block with the existing streetscape, paying homage to the heritage of the area while embracing modern living standards. By blending harmoniously with the surrounding architecture and urban layout, this project contributes to the evolution of the Lauriston neighbourhood in Glasgow.
Poynder Apartments, Kelso
Company: Aitken Turnbull Architects
Client: Eildon Housing Association
Located in the former Kelso High School building, this project offers 34 one- and two-bedroom flats tailored for elderly residents in need of extra care. With wheelchair access, onsite care services, a communal restaurant, and relaxing garden areas, the facility provides a holistic living experience that promotes independence and community interaction among residents. The emphasis on sustainability and biodiversity in the design reflects a commitment to creating a vibrant and environmentally responsible living space.
The Scottish Design Awards are a testament to the talent and creativity that thrive in the architecture and design sectors. The meticulous organisation of the event, coupled with the celebration of innovation and ingenuity, sets the stage for an extraordinary showcase of exceptional projects and visionary designs.
