Airdrie store makeover almost finished
The historic Orrs Department Store site in Airdrie is undergoing a remarkable transformation, with the finishing touches on the renovation nearing completion. This redevelopment project, situated in the heart of South Bridge Street, signifies a crucial milestone in North Lanarkshire Council’s town centre regeneration plans.
For almost 150 years, Orrs stood as a beloved shopping destination for the local community. However, following its closure in 2007, the vacant building became a source of concern for residents. After years of uncertainty and stalled plans by other developers, the council intervened, and the redevelopment is finally becoming a reality.
Jim Logue, the council leader, has played a pivotal role in spearheading the revival of the building. He recently visited the site to oversee the final touches to the interior of the structure.
Expressing his excitement about the project, Councillor Logue stated, “We are delighted to breathe new life into this iconic site. The redevelopment of Orrs signifies a positive progression for Airdrie, providing residents with a reason to take pride in their town centre once again.
“Although this regeneration project has been a long time in the making, I am certain that local residents will share in my joy at witnessing the building being revived. I eagerly anticipate seeing the first tenants moving into these exceptional new flats in the weeks to come.”
The revitalised building now boasts 20 brand new, high-quality flats, addressing the area’s demand for social housing. In addition, there are two ground-level commercial properties that offer exciting prospects for retail or community spaces.
The council has partnered with Wilson Developments to bring this project to fruition, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the local community and providing much-needed housing options.
