Dundee’s Urgent Appeal: City Centre Scaffolding Situation
Property owners in Dundee city centre are being urged to promptly dismantle scaffolding from their buildings following completion of maintenance work, as highlighted by the city’s senior councillor.
Councillor Steven Rome, the Fair Work, Economic Growth, and Infrastructure convener, commended those owners who are proactive in preventing structural deterioration. However, he raised concerns about the inconvenience caused by prolonged scaffolding presence.
“While I appreciate the necessity for scaffolding during maintenance projects, its extended retention, often due to the complexity of multiple owner involvement, poses significant challenges,” expressed Councillor Rome.
He continued, “The obstruction on pavements poses hazards for individuals with visual impairments, wheelchair users, and parents with prams. Moreover, it adversely affects retail activities by discouraging potential customers.”
Despite some progress in removing scaffolding across the city centre, there are still approximately six key sites where scaffolding has lingered for several months or even years.
“I implore all building owners to expedite property works and dismantle scaffolding swiftly,” emphasised Councillor Rome. “While the council’s authority in this matter is limited, it is crucial to prevent scaffolding from becoming a prolonged fixture.”
