Shotts retirement complex launches No Cold Calling Zone

North Lanarkshire Council has recently implemented a No Cold Calling Zone at the Mornay Way retirement complex in Shotts, in a bid to combat doorstep crime in the area.
The collaborative effort between the council’s Trading Standards team, Police Scotland, residents, and the complex manager has resulted in the establishment of this protective zone. Clear signs have been strategically placed around the complex, sending a strong message to cold callers that their presence is unwelcome. Residents are encouraged to report any issues encountered, which will then be promptly investigated.
Councillor Helen Loughran, who serves as the convener of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, highlighted the importance of ensuring residents’ safety and security within their own homes. She emphasised that this initiative plays a crucial role in deterring unwanted callers who often employ deceptive or aggressive sales tactics, particularly when offering services such as gardening or roofing repairs.
Loughran further explained, “Our Trading Standards Officers frequently encounter instances where unscrupulous traders take advantage of unsuspecting individuals through dishonest practices. These tactics often result in residents being burdened with exorbitant costs for substandard work or unfinished projects, ultimately leaving them in a difficult position of having to seek additional assistance to rectify or complete the work.”
She added, “The introduction of No Cold Calling Zones forms part of a wider array of measures that we, in collaboration with Police Scotland, are implementing to combat doorstep crime and safeguard our residents from falling victim to unscrupulous practices.”
By establishing a No Cold Calling Zone at the Mornay Way retirement complex, North Lanarkshire Council is taking proactive steps to protect vulnerable residents and create a safer living environment for all individuals within the community.
