Perth social housing project wins UK award

A remarkable project that revitalised a former pub site in Perth by transforming it into social housing has garnered recognition at a prestigious UK awards ceremony. The site of the former 208 pub on Crieff Road was repurposed to construct 24 new flats for tenants of Perth & Kinross Council back in 2019.
The project secured the runner-up prize in the Neighbourhood Transformation category at the national Aico Community Awards, which took place at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre. These awards are hosted biennially to honour excellence within the social housing industry.
The council’s construction partner CCG undertook the construction of these new flats at the prominent Crieff Road site. The flats consist of high-quality two-bedroom units available for affordable social rent, with three of the six ground-floor flats being specially designed to cater to tenants with mobility issues.
This development played a crucial role in converting a derelict site into appealing and much-needed housing options for affordable social rent. It was part of Perth & Kinross Council’s broader house building initiative across the region, which has successfully introduced over 400 new council homes since 2012.
Councillor Tom McEwan, the council’s Housing and Social Wellbeing convener, expressed his delight, stating, “It’s fantastic to see this significant social housing project in Perth gaining recognition at a national level. We were among the three Scottish housing projects nominated for these prestigious awards.”
He added, “The new flats occupy a prime location on Crieff Road, and the council’s acquisition of the land for this development was crucial. This construction project has played a pivotal role in the rejuvenation of this particular area in Perth, especially with the completion of the A9/A85 road project.”
“In addition to the obvious improvements from the previous state of the site, these flats now offer top-notch accommodation at an affordable rental rate. The council remains steadfast in its commitment to providing more affordable housing options for the people of Perth and Kinross, actively identifying new sites for social housing construction,” Councillor Tom McEwan emphasised.
