Wales teams up for safer roads

The Welsh Government is taking decisive action to ensure that 20mph speed limits are implemented effectively in collaboration with local authorities and communities. In a recent announcement to the Senedd, the Cabinet Secretary outlined a comprehensive three-phase plan to engage with the public, work with key bodies, and make tangible changes on the ground.

Central to the strategy is a ‘national listening programme’ that will involve gathering insights from local communities to understand their perspectives on road safety. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that the voices of people are heard and considered in the decision-making process.

The three-phase plan will unfold as follows:

1. A genuine programme of listening to people: Engaging with various community stakeholders to gather feedback and insights on road safety concerns.
2. Work in partnership with key bodies: Collaborating with local councils that are already focusing on road safety to incorporate their expertise and insights into the implementation process.
3. Deliver the necessary changes on the ground: Utilising the collected data and feedback to adjust speed limits on roads where improvements are deemed necessary for road safety.

Welsh Cabinet Secretary Ken Skates emphasised the importance of community engagement in shaping transport policies. He stated, “We’ve started by listening. I have been clear in all my conversations that we will put communities at the heart of our thinking and will listen to people.

“We believe that a 20mph speed limit is appropriate near sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals, and residential areas to enhance road safety. Our primary goal is to save lives and reduce road traffic incidents. By listening to the input of local communities and councils, we aim to refine our policies and establish appropriate speed limits for different road environments.”

Skates further added, “Ultimately, the decisions regarding speed limit changes in each of the 22 local authority areas will be driven by public feedback and local councils, as they have the authority over most residential roads.”

The Welsh Government is poised to release additional guidance in July, with the implementation of speed limit changes expected to commence in September. By working in partnership with local authorities and communities, the government aims to create safer road environments for all residents.
