Govan waste ground to be revitalised

The proposed community space in Govan is set to undergo a remarkable transformation, breathing life into unloved waste ground and creating an eco-friendly hub for the community. Elderpark Housing is spearheading this project, aiming to turn a neglected piece of land into a vibrant community garden with a strong commitment to sustainability.
This parcel of land was previously home to the janitor’s residence connected to the Hills Trust primary school, constructed in 1974. However, the buildings were demolished around 2010, leaving the area barren and unused. Today, Elderpark Housing occupies the original Hills Trust School, built in 1874, just a stone’s throw away from the derelict site.
The housing association has ambitious plans for the space, although funding is still being sought to bring these visions to life. The proposed community garden will not only provide a space for growing produce but will also serve as a focal point for community activities.
The exciting plans include flower and vegetable growing areas, focusing on producing culturally appropriate crops to reflect the diverse population of modern-day Govan. Additionally, there will be a bike station, recycling facilities, and opportunities for local schools to engage in outdoor learning. Organised walks will start and end at the garden, offering a peaceful retreat for residents and promoting positive mental health.
Jonathan Giddings-Reid, the community regeneration officer at Elderpark Housing, expressed confidence in the project’s success, citing strong community support as a driving force. He stated, “We are very confident that we will make these exciting plans a reality with enthusiastic community backing – transforming land which has been unused for many years.”
Furthermore, Giddings-Reid emphasised the housing association’s commitment to promoting wellbeing among tenants and the wider community. The redevelopment of the waste ground aligns with their goal of creating opportunities for a healthier and more sustainable neighbourhood.
The location of the proposed community garden is strategically positioned between Elderpark’s offices and newly constructed homes at Nethan Street. This central location near Govan Cross ensures accessibility and convenience for the local community to benefit from the green space.
