Orkney’s Local Development Plan Begins now

An event in Stromness this week marks the beginning of the Orkney Local Development Plan review process. This review is crucial in shaping the future of Orkney’s towns, villages, and rural areas by determining where development should and should not occur.

Orkney Council’s Development and Marine Planning Team is currently in the evidence-gathering stage of the process. A series of events will be held across Orkney to facilitate input from local residents, key stakeholders, and landowners. Stromness is the first stop on this journey.

Councillor David Dawson, chair of the council’s Development and Infrastructure Committee, emphasised the significance of the Orkney Local Development Plan. He highlighted that this document outlines areas of importance that need protection and areas suitable for new development to address social, economic, and housing needs.

Dawson stressed the importance of community input in the review process. The team is organising a series of meetings to gather views from stakeholders and the public. The Stromness drop-in event, scheduled for the 25th of April 2024 at the Warehouse Buildings between 10am and 6pm, will provide an opportunity for individuals to share their ideas and thoughts for Stromness and
Orkney as a whole.

This event is just the beginning of a collaborative process designed to ensure that the Or development plan reflects the aspirations and priorities of Orkney’s residents. Stay tuned for more opportunities to engage and contribute as the plan evolves.
