Training boosts skills, fuels economy

The Department for Work and Pensions has made a significant announcement that over 250,000 workplace training opportunities have been provided to benefits claimants in the last three years. This initiative aims to enhance skills development and contribute to long-term economic growth.

During the previous financial year, the DWP successfully delivered 81,190 training places, surpassing the target of 80,000 two months ahead of schedule. This achievement brings the total number of training places provided to a commendable 266,330.

This feat has been accomplished through the Sector-based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) introduced by the government as part of its strategic plan for sustainable growth. Launched in 2021, SWAPs offer jobseekers the opportunity to secure employment positions that entail six weeks of on-the-job training and experience, ultimately leading to a guaranteed interview.

SWAPs are frequently supported by employers seeking to fill vacant positions within their organisations. Some of the most sought-after sectors include:

Construction – 36,810

Security – 25,900

Hospitality – 21,250

Logistics and freight – 19,930

Mel Stride MP, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, expressed his satisfaction with the widespread uptake of SWAPs, highlighting their value in enabling individuals to acquire new skills and practical experience, thereby increasing their chances of securing employment and achieving success.

“Whether individuals are over 50 and re-entering the workforce or just embarking on their careers, SWAPs have proven to be instrumental in assisting thousands in climbing the career ladder. Furthermore, these programmes aid businesses in filling job vacancies with proficient staff members who are ready to hit the ground running,” stated Mel Stride MP.

He added, “Building upon this milestone achievement, our £2.5 billion Back to Work Plan is poised to support over a million individuals in commencing and prospering in their employment journeys.”

Analysis of the age demographics reveals that the largest number of SWAPs starts were among individuals aged 20-24, with a total of 40,700 new starts recorded, while those aged over 50 accounted for 38,040 new starts. London emerged as the region with the highest number of SWAPs starts, registering 45,630 individuals, closely followed by the South East and North West with 28,250 and 28,130 starts respectively.
