Susanne Millar appointed as Chief Executive of Glasgow City Council
Susanne Millar has been appointed as the new chief executive of Glasgow City Council, taking over from Annemarie O’Donnell who announced her retirement earlier this year after over 30 years of service to the city. Currently serving as the chief officer of Glasgow’s Health and Social Care Partnership, Ms Millar is expected to assume her new duties gradually, with a full transition in place before Annemarie’s official retirement in early May.
With a career deeply rooted in social work and social care services, Ms Millar has held various key positions within the city. From working in residential care for older individuals to handling homelessness and asylum services, she eventually rose to the position of chief officer for planning, strategy & commissioning within the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership. Known for her commitment to delivering impactful reforms, she has played a pivotal role in reducing rough sleeping and enhancing support for vulnerable children and families.
Glasgow City Council’s leader, Susan Aitken, expressed her delight in welcoming Susanne Millar to the role, praising her dynamism, energy, and dedication to improving the lives of Glaswegians. Recognizing the challenges posed by austerity, Ms Aitken highlighted Ms Millar’s vision for Glasgow, emphasizing the need to harness partnerships within the city to create positive change, particularly for those most in need.
In response to her appointment, Susanne Millar shared her excitement and honour in taking on this new role. Having worked closely with Annemarie for many years, she acknowledged the significant legacy she is inheriting but expressed her eagerness to contribute to the community she knows and loves. Applauding the dedicated team at the Health and Social Care Partnership, Ms Millar conveyed her pride in their ongoing efforts for the city.
