National Grid activates 1,000th charger for EV fleet expansion
National Grid has achieved a significant milestone by installing the 1,000th electric vehicle charger on its premises, aligning with its goal of transitioning to a 100% electric fleet by 2030. This remarkable feat was made possible with the support of ElectrAssure, an EV charging solutions provider that has been working alongside the energy company since June 2021.
The installation of the 1,000th charger took place at the Wymondley Substation in Hertfordshire earlier this month, catering to the needs of National Grid colleagues and engineers. Over 100 sites have now been equipped with both AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current) chargers, marking a significant step towards reducing emissions from the company’s operations.
Back in September 2023, National Grid unveiled its 1,000th electric vehicle as part of its commitment to a 100% light-duty electric fleet outlined in its Responsible Business Charter. This charter not only focuses on transitioning to electric vehicles but also aims to impact society positively by increasing workforce and leadership diversity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, encouraging community volunteering efforts, and more.
Prem Gabbi, the director of UK land and property at National Grid, expressed his pride in reaching this milestone, highlighting the importance of having the necessary infrastructure to support the transition to electric vehicles. He commended the teams for their efforts in leading the company towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
Alun Davies, operations director for ElectrAssure, emphasised the extensive planning and organization required for a project of this scale to be successful. Both National Grid and ElectrAssure collaborated effectively to ensure the smooth and efficient provision of charging facilities for National Grid’s electric fleet, minimizing disruptions to critical operations at substations and sites.
It is noteworthy that the contract has been operating ahead of schedule, showcasing the high level of operational availability post-installation. This achievement underscores the collaborative and proactive approach taken by both companies towards promoting sustainability and innovation in the field of electric vehicle infrastructure.
