Cenergist Begins £1.7m Carbon Reduction Project at British Geological Survey HQ

Energy and water efficiency company Cenergist has embarked on a monumental £1.7m decarbonisation project for the British Geological Survey (BGS) headquarters in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire.
The groundbreaking ceremony saw the presence of Ruth Edwards, MP for Rushcliffe, who received a comprehensive briefing on the project. This initiative is a pivotal part of BGS’s strategic roadmap to achieve Net Zero status by the year 2040.
Cenergist was selected by the BGS’s parent organisation, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), to implement this innovative decarbonisation solution.
Initially designed by Pick Everard, Cenergist is now transforming the plan into a detailed solution that involves transitioning the current gas-fired heating and hot water system to a ground source heat pump system. The completion of this work is scheduled for May 2024.
David Boon, Senior Engineering and Geothermal Geologist at BGS, highlighted the essence of geothermal energy as a constant source of heat beneath the ground, available 24/7 across the UK.
He explained, “This project will showcase the utilization of ground-source heat pump technology to decarbonise existing buildings within the public sector estate.”
Daniel Crow, Head of BGS Estates and Facilities, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “This exciting initiative allows us to combine our subsurface observations with cutting-edge low-carbon heating technology.”
Cenergist actively assists organisations in the private and public sectors, such as local authorities and housing associations, in decarbonising their heating systems. Aside from the UK, Cenergist also operates in Holland, Spain, and India.
Steve Wilkinson, Head of Commercial Projects at Cenergist, conveyed his enthusiasm about commencing work at the BGS headquarters to support their progressive journey towards decarbonisation.
Wilkinson added, “BGS’s ambitious target of achieving Net Zero by 2040 is commendable, and the installation of a ground source heat pump system marks a significant stride towards this goal.”
He further emphasised, “Cenergist boasts an impeccable track record of collaborating with public sector entities to deliver decarbonisation retrofits on schedule and within budget. We eagerly anticipate completing this remarkable project, which will undoubtedly future-proof the BGS headquarters.”
